COMMENTS:  Falkensee was licensed by the Trakehner Verband in Germany before his export to New Zealand.  His quote from the Trakehner Heft official report read, "Falkensee, in his expression of hardiness and performance ability promises and excels also in the superb and swinging way of his movements - a truly balanced horse and always engaged from behind and elevated in front.  The German breeders have lost a valuable and promising sire who would have deserved special recognition not just because of his breeding but also as he showed a special expression of health and hardiness and willingness to perform."

Falkensee has stamped his progeny with his good Trakehner type and has proven himself especially prepotent in producing superb toplines and very good elevated and elastic movements with excellent self-carriage.

In the 1994/95 NZEF Dressage Sires Ratings over all age groups, Falkensee was in 8th position.  In the same Ratings for the 5, 6 and 7 year olds Falkensee was in 2nd place.  This was particularly noteworthy as his oldest progeny were only 5 years old when the points where taken.

Falkensee's sire Chopstick was bred in Denmark, where he was a leading sporthorse sire for Trakehners and Danish Warmbloods.  Through special efforts of the former Verband manager, Dr v.Velsen, Chopstick was leased for one season only by a German stud.  Chopstick, whose foals were consistently awarded the highest marks at grading, had been Reserve Champion at the Selection Test and Champion of the Performance Test against stallions of all Warmblood breeds.

Chopstick's sire, the thoroughbred Deadly Nightshade, was himself successful on the track, over jumps and on the flat and became a popular sire after his retirement to stud.  He was used for Trakehners, Danish Warmbloods, Holsteiners and Oldenburgers, and became a sire of many good event horses.  His sire line goes back to Nasrulla-Nearco and on the dam side there are such well known names as Court Martial, Fair Trail and My Babu.

Chopstick, because of his outstanding movements was often presented as "action trotter" and described as "... very impressive stallion, strong muscled, equipped with excellent sporthorse points.  A stallion every rider must dream of."

Chopstick's dam line goes back to the original National Studbook line of Corvette by Hirtensang.  His dam Cinderella was a mare of excellent type and very consolidated Trakehner breeding.  She is a half sister to Catalina by Ibikus, Supreme Champion Broodmare at the National Danish Warmblood Show.  Her son Camelot by Arsenal, after being selected, did an excellent performance test and is now at stud in West Germany.

Falkensee is out of the dam line of Flamme, which also produced the stallions Flakner, Fahnentrager, Mahdi and Flaneur.  Flaneur is regarded as one of the most influential sires post WWII.  He sired 14 licensed stallions, who all made good names for themselves.  Especially important are Arogno, Rubin and Instanbul (exported to the UK).  As a broodmare sire, Flaneur sired the valuable mares Karawane, German Champion Trakehner Broodmare, and Maharani who was dam to the famous stallions Mahagony and Mackensen.  Falkensee's dam Famina is a typical mare of this excellent line.  In her 9 breeding years she produced 9 foals, almost all of them graded in Class 1.

At the 1988 mare selections (from a total of 212 mares) only 4 of the mares received the top mark of 10 for movement.  In amongst the 212 mares presented were 3 from the Flamme line, of which 2 were in the 4 who received the mark 10 - one of them being a half sister to Falkensee.  Exceptional movement is well anchored in this line.

Famina's sire Athlet is by the renowned stallion Donauwind, sire of the famous Abdullah and Dr Klimke's Fabian, and many other top sporthorses.  Athlet's dam Arwa is regarded as one the grand old ladies of German sporthorse breeding.  She foaled the sons Antar, Akzent, Achill and Aquamarin.  Antar and Akzent became top 3 day eventers (Akzent was silver medallist at the European 3DE Championships in Burghley in 1977), Achill was a successful A Grade showjumper, while Aquamarin was a Grand Prix dressage horse.  Her daughters Afra, Artige and Arwetta themselves became Champion broodmares and stallion mothers - Amateur, Aron, Arsenal, Argument and Argonaut all finished in the top group at the Performance Test.  Further back in Famina's pedigree there are many more famous names like Malachit, Hessentein, Illing and Major, themselves trained to Grand Prix level in dressage.

Falkensee's pedigree shows a strong accumulation of performance blood on both sire and dam sides, rarely seen in such concentration.

From New Zealand he was exported to Australia where he stands at Wolffdene Stud in Tasmania.
