The old year wasn't quite over when in mid-December the news was received by Trakehners International from France, that the Trakehner stallion Maestro (one of the last remaining sons of Matador in the world) had passed away.

Maestro was born in 1987 and was by the DLG champion stallion Matador, out of Maike II by Herzkönig - Maigraf xx - Hansakapitän.  His dam line was that of O181B2 Malvenblüte, which originated after WWI in Gestüt Hunnesrück and traces back to Mascotte by Adamas ox, a grey mare at Trakehnen. This particular family also stands for such stallions as Marduc, Magnet, Märchenstein, Marlo, Roland, Merkur, Magister or the young Mon Baron.

Maestro, who competed at M levels in dressage as a younger stallion, stood at stud in Germany (e.g. Gestüt Hämelschenburg and Gestüt St. Stephan), in Great Britain (Muschamp Stud) and then later in France for Mr. Green.  Long time care taker Anais Sauvage said he was a much loved center of the household and actually roamed free on the farm, more like a giant dog than a breeding stallion.

Maestro left a number of good performance horses in Great Britain, e.g. Muschamp Impala who competed at advanced levels in eventing.  As Maestro was such an international stallion, it is no surprise to see that his son Highfield Vivaldi stands at stud here in Australia.

Maestro is also valued for his high quality daughters, like Gestüt Hämelschenburg's excellent Gwendolyn, a proven producer and probably a perfect example of a hallmark of Maestro's heritage: impeccable temperament. Our condolences to Anais and her partner for their loss, and may Maestro rest in peace.
